Concerns are rising as Lee Jong Hoo (26, San Francisco Giants) has been diagnosed with a dislocated left shoulder, and in the worst-case scenario, he may have to end the season prematurely.

On the 13th, Lee Jong Hoo collided with the fence while trying to catch a home run ball during a home game against Cincinnati at Oracle Park in San Francisco, California. He attempted to catch a ball hit by Jeimer Candelario, but collided with the fence and fell.

A troubling scene was witnessed as the trainer tightly held Lee Jong Hoo’s left arm to keep it from moving while he was complaining about pain in his left shoulder.

Lee Jong Hoo was immediately replaced. Initially, San Francisco announced that Lee Jong Hoo was pulled out due to a shoulder sprain, but later corrected the reason for the replacement to a shoulder dislocation. The extent of Lee Jong Hoo’s injury is yet to be confirmed. The result of the MRI test to be taken on the 14th will determine the treatment method and duration.

There are rumors of a possible long-term injury among local media outlets. It is essential to keep the dislocated shoulder joint stable when a shoulder dislocation occurs. If the condition is mild, there is no need to worry too much, as one can return in a few weeks. However, surgery may be required if the injury is severe enough to reveal microfractures or rotator cuff tears.

The problem is that Lee Jong Hoo has injured the same shoulder area twice. He had surgery on his left shoulder while playing for the Kiwoom Heroes in June and October 2018, so this injury seems serious—comments from coach Bob Melvin also fuel concerns. After the game, he said, “Lee Jong Hoo is not in good condition. He couldn’t stand up properly after colliding with the fence. It doesn’t feel good.”

Local sports media outlet The Athletic reported Lee Jong Hoo’s shoulder dislocation as a “serious injury that may require surgery” and predicted that he could be out for an extended period. If he undergoes surgery, we might not see Lee Jong Hoo play this season. According to News1, it takes six months to throw a ball after shoulder dislocation surgery. Only after six months do muscle strength and joint mobility return to normal. In the worst-case scenario, he may only be able to return after all the season’s schedules, including the World Series, have ended. His first season in the Major League could end in vain. Lee Jong Hoo has only played 37 games, including the game against Cincinnati.
