Rodrigo Bentancur’s racist remarks toward Son Heung Min have sparked controversy, prompting a review of Son Heung Min’s previous position on racial discrimination.

On June 16, U.K.’s GiveMeSport reported that Son consistently suffered from racial discrimination while playing in the English Premier League.

The media outlet stated, “As a victim of racial discrimination, Son has a history of experiencing it and spoke about the pain he faced in the past.”

Son expressed his thoughts on racial discrimination during a press in 2019, stating, “I am playing in the U.K. I have experienced racial discrimination here. I believe the best response is not to react.”

He continued, “It doesn’t matter where you come from. We are all in this sport together. We need to protect and fight for players who experience racial discrimination. We don’t discuss these things in the locker room because no player wants to talk about racial discrimination.”

The media outlet heavily criticized Bentancur for doing the same thing to Son, who still suffers from this pain, stating, “Son was racially discriminated against by fans of Chelsea, West Ham, and Crystal Palace.”

During a conversation on a Uruguayan podcast, Bentancur brought up Son, implying that “all Asians look the same.” This discriminatory remark was met with criticism, and he eventually apologized through social media.

“Sonny, my brother! I apologize for what happened. It was a very bad joke. I hope you know that I never intended to hurt you or anyone else and that I love and respect you,” he shared at the time.

However, fans questioned his sincerity as this apology was posted to his Instagram stories, which disappeared after 24 hours. Local U.K. media outlets have concentrated on reporting on his discriminatory remark.

Tottenham has not yet commented on the controversy.
