Novak Djokovic (ranked 2nd, Serbia) took a strong first step toward his 25th major singles title. On August 27, at the US Open Tennis Tournament held at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York, with total prize money of $75 million, Djokovic defeated Radu Albot (ranked 138th, Moldova) 3-0 (6-2, 6-2, 6-4) in the first round of the men’s singles, advancing to the second round.

If Djokovic wins this year’s US Open, he will set a record for the most major singles titles, reaching 25. Only Margaret Court (retired, Australia) holds 24 major singles titles in the women’s category. Last year, Djokovic topped the US Open, but he has yet to win a major this year. He reached the Wimbledon finals but lost to Carlos Alcaraz (ranked 3rd, Spain), finishing as the runner-up.

With this victory, Djokovic recorded his 89th win at the US Open, tying with Roger Federer (retired, Switzerland) for the second-most wins in the US Open men’s singles. The record is held by Jimmy Connors (retired, USA) with 98 wins. Djokovic will face fellow Serbian Laslo Djere (ranked 109th) in his next match as they compete for a spot in the third round. The two players have faced each other twice, with Djokovic winning both times.

In the women’s singles at the tournament, defending champion Coco Gauff (3rd, USA) advanced to the second round with a decisive 2-0 victory over Varvara Gracheva (66th, France), winning 6-2, 6-0. Gauff, born in 2004 and clinched her first major title at the US Open last year, recorded 10 aces in this match. In her next round, she will face veteran Tatjana Maria (99th, Germany), born in 1987.

Meanwhile, Olympic gold medalist Qinwen Zheng (7th, China) made a solid comeback to defeat Amanda Anisimova (50th, USA) 2-1, with scores of 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. Zheng will next compete against Erika Andreeva (75th, Russia).
