Under the guidance of coach Jesse Marsch, the Canadian national soccer team has opened a new chapter in football history by achieving its first away win against the U.S. in 67 years.

On Sunday, in a match held at Children’s Mercy Park in Kansas City, Kansas, Canada defeated the United States 2-1, marking a monumental victory. This victory was Canada’s first on American soil in 67 years, with their last win being a 3-2 victory during the qualifiers for the 1957 World Cup in Sweden.

In this match, Canada took the lead in the 17th minute when Jacob Shaffelburg scored the opening goal. Shaffelburg broke through the defense and netted a powerful shot, bringing immense joy to his team. Jonathan doubled the lead in the 58th minute, leading to 2-0.

The U.S. managed to pull one back in the 66th minute when Luca de la Torre scored, but Canada’s defense held firm and did not allow any additional goals. The match concluded with Canada’s dominance; despite the USA’s higher FIFA ranking at 16th place, Canada outperformed in all aspects, leading 17-8 in total shots and 7-5 in shots on target.

Marsch praised his players after the match against the USA, saying, “You can see the mentality that’s been developed.” He emphasized, “You can see how much they love playing for the national team, and they’re willing to put their careers and lives on the line in the way they play to be the best they can be for each other and the team.”

Since taking over as the head coach of the Canadian national team in May 2023, Marsch has significantly improved the team’s performance. Notably, Canada made its debut in the 2024 Copa América, where, under Marsch’s leadership, they advanced to the semifinals. Although they lost to Argentina in the semifinals, they subsequently fiercely fought against the South American powerhouse Uruguay in the third-place match.

Meanwhile, the U.S. faces challenges following this defeat. With coach Gregg Berhalter recently dismissed, the team is searching for a new head coach. Mauricio Pochettino is being mentioned as a potential next head coach for the USA team, though no official announcement has been made yet.
