Sinner Beats Djokovic, Makes History as First Italian Year-End No. 1

Italy’s Yannick Sinner, now the world’s top-ranked men’s tennis player, defeated veteran Novak Djokovic in a commanding performance to win the Shanghai Masters. Sinner overpowered the Serbian legend in the men’s singles final, winning 2-0 with scores of 7-6 (7-4), 6-3, in a match that wrapped up on Sunday.

With this victory, Sinner has now secured his seventh singles title in an ATP tour event this year. Riding a three-match winning streak against the formidable Djokovic, he has leveled their head-to-head record at 4 wins and 4 losses. The winner’s prize for this tournament is $1.1 million.

Sinner anticipated this victory after his rival, Carlos Alcaraz, was eliminated in the quarterfinals. Following his semifinal triumph the previous day, Sinner solidified his position as the world number one for the year, carrying that momentum into his match against Djokovic.

Sinner is the first Italian player to reach the ATP Tour year-end singles world number one ranking. Already an Australian Open champion, he added his second Grand Slam title last month by winning the US Open, making 2023 the peak of his career.

In contrast, Djokovic’s pursuit of a milestone 100 ATP Tour singles titles has been postponed. While he battled through a competitive first set, he ultimately couldn’t keep pace with Sinner’s relentless play. Djokovic remains one of only two players, along with Jimmy Connors (109 titles) and Roger Federer (103 titles), to have surpassed the 100-title milestone in the ATP Tour’s history.
