Ohtani’s Costly Decision: Did He Miss His Chance to Score?

Yonhap News

Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Dodgers found himself under scrutiny during a baserunning play in the first inning of Game 5 of the League Championship Series against the New York Mets on On Saturday. The day after the game, Ohtani quickly discussed the situation with his coach upon returning to Los Angeles.

According to the official X account of Dodgers Blue, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts mentioned in a press conference that Ohtani reviewed the play with third base coach Dino Ebel and expressed confidence that the mistake wouldn’t happen again.

Ohtani played as the designated hitter in the fifth game on Saturday, hitting a single that landed in front of the right fielder in the first inning. He advanced to third base following Mookie Betts’ double. However, when the third batter, Teoscar Hernandez, grounded out to shortstop, Ohtani failed to advance home, missing the opportunity to score the first run.

The Dodgers ultimately lost 6-12, and Ohtani’s baserunning decision became a topic of debate among U.S. media and fans. In a post-game press conference, Roberts explained that with the ball moving toward the center of the infield, Ohtani should have taken off but didn’t. “There’s no excuse,” Roberts admitted, expressing his regret over the missed opportunity.

The Dodgers will play Game 6 on Monday (October 21), with a chance to clinch a spot in the World Series as they lead the series 3-2.
