Tesla’s New Tech Monitors Your Yawns and Blinks to Prevent Drowsy Driving

globalautonews Views

Tesla has launched a new drowsy driver alert feature that uses an internal camera for driver monitoring. Until now, they have only used torque detection on the steering wheel and an interior-facing camera. However, earlier this year, they began research to further utilize the interior-facing camera by calculating the driver’s yawns and blink rate to measure drowsiness. They have now started implementing the drowsy driver alert feature.

The drowsy driver alert is designed to monitor the driver’s facial features and driving behavior, identify drowsiness patterns, and alert drivers deemed to be falling asleep. When drowsiness is detected, a warning is displayed on the touch screen in the card area, and a warning sound is emitted. This feature is currently only being applied to vehicles in Europe.

Tesla has stated that this feature is only activated when driving at least 40 mph for a minimum of 10 minutes with Autopilot disengaged.

Mercedes Benz has been using a similar feature for nearly 10 years.
