The Chinese government has criticized the upcoming summit between the United States, Japan, and the Philippines on the 11th, accusing it of “promoting exclusive factional opposition.”

Mao Ning, spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, responded to a question asked during a regular briefing on the 8th, “How does China view the relationship between the three countries, as it seems that the leaders of Japan and the Philippines are going to strengthen their defense relations at a summit in the United States?”

Spokesperson Mao Ning emphasized, “Whatever cooperation any country develops should benefit regional peace and stability. We oppose the creation of an exclusive, narrow fence. We oppose any attempt to create factional confrontation in this region.”

The United States, Japan, and the Philippines have been strengthening their joint actions, such as conducting joint naval exercises in the South China Sea in June last year, to contain China.

In the meantime, Spokesperson Mao Ning refuted the US’s recent announcement of plans to deploy mid-range missiles in the India-Pacific region, saying, “China is adhering to the path of peaceful development and a defensive national defense policy. We have no intention of competing militarily with any country.”

She continued, “China has strongly opposed the US’s placement of mid-range missiles in the Asia-Pacific region and its strengthening of the front line at China’s doorstep to seek unilateral military superiority. We urge the United States to seriously respect the security concerns of other countries and stop actions that undermine regional peace and stability.”
