U.S. Encourages South Korea to Decide Its Own Ukraine Aid

A.P./Newsis Pat Ryder, the U.S. Defense Department Press Secretary, said, “We will let South Korea speak for itself on the items it will support Ukraine with.”

The U.S. believes that “South Korea will decide on the items it supports Ukraine with.” This is the U.S. government’s stance following President Yoon Suk Yeol’s statement during the press conference marking his second year in office that “we will not support lethal weapons anywhere.”

The U.S. Defense Department Press Secretary, Maj. Gen. Patrick S. Ryder said in a briefing on the 9th (local time), “About supporting Ukraine, we will let South Korea speak for itself on what it can comfortably support.”

About Yoon drawing a line on the support of lethal weapons for offensive use against Ukraine during the press conference marking his second year in office, the U.S. expressed the position that the items of support for Ukraine are a matter for the South Korean government to mention.

Ryder added, “South Korea has been a great ally, providing non-lethal support items to Ukraine and supporting broader efforts to deter and block Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.”

Previously, Yoon stated in his “Yoon Suk Yeol government’s two-year national report and press conference” that “The war in Ukraine is an illegal attack not allowed under international law” and declared, “We have a firm policy of not supporting offensive lethal weapons and are approaching support for Ukraine with this stance.”
