Tesla’s China Sales Dip: What’s Behind the Drop in April Figures?

globalautonews Views

Tesla’s retail sales in China in April were 31,421 units, down 21.4 percent from a year ago. Based on data from the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), Tesla sold 62,167 Chinese-made vehicles in April, including 37,460 for export. This implies that the decrease in sales in the Chinese market was due to exports. The Model Y accounted for 31,962 of total sales, and the Model 3 accounted for 3,205.

In the January-April period, Tesla sold 163,841 units in China, down 7.64 percent year-on-year.

Tesla has announced plans to produce cars for export in the first half of the year and to target the local market in the second half.

Tesla China’s exports in April increased by 15.30% to 26,666 from March but decreased by 14.32% from the same month last year when they were 35,886.

In April, retail sales of new energy vehicles in the Chinese market increased by 28.3% year-on-year to 674,000. Among them, sales of battery electric vehicles increased by 12.21% to 405,000, and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles increased by 64.23% to 269,000.

In the Chinese new energy vehicle market, Tesla’s market share fell to 4.66% in April, down from 8.8% in March and 7.58% a year ago. If limited to battery electric vehicles, Tesla’s market share fell to 7.76% in April, down from 14.58% in March and 10.80% a year ago.
