The Middle East is in turmoil following the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh, leader of Hamas’ political bureau, during the inauguration ceremony of Iran’s president. This event has escalated tensions in the region, and Iran’s Supreme Leader has vowed to seek revenge.
According to Al Jazeera, Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei stated that Israel has “invited severe punishment” with the assassination of Haniyeh.
He said, “In this tragic and difficult incident that took place on Iranian soil, We consider it our duty to take vengeance.”
Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) confirmed that Haniyeh was killed in an Israeli raid targeting his residence after attending the inauguration ceremony of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. One of his bodyguards also perished in the attack.
Hamas has accused Israel of orchestrating the attack, although Israel has not issued any statement on the matter.
Haniyeh has led Hamas in the Gaza Strip since 2007 and was elected head of the Hamas political bureau in 2017. He has been actively involved in ceasefire negotiations with Israel following the onset of the Gaza War.
The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas has tragically claimed over 30,000 lives to date. Experts predict that the recent assassination of Haniyeh will have a profound effect on any potential ceasefire negotiations.
