“Beware of wolves.”
A ‘wolf warning’ has been issued in Ridge Hills, located in the central Dutch province of Utrecht.
The Guardian reported that the authorities of Utrecht issued a statement advising visitors to be particularly cautious of wolves in the Ridge Hills area. They added that people should especially avoid visiting the forested regions of Ridge Hills with children.
Ridge Hills is a densely forested area frequented by hikers, cyclists, and other outdoor enthusiasts. The warning was issued due to the presence of wolves.
The Guardian reported that a wolf injured a girl in the nearby village of Austerlitz. On the 1st, another child was knocked down by a large animal suspected to be a wolf. Also, in early July, a woman reported that a wolf killed her pet dog.
Austerlitz is a village about 16 kilometers east of Utrecht’s provincial capital. Authorities have intensified searches around Ridge Hills, suspecting that the incidents are the work of a single wolf, not many. Experts stated that the wolf showed unstable behavior.
Authorities advise, “If you encounter a wolf, instead of running away, make yourself appear larger and make noise while slowly backing away.”
Reports of wolf sightings in the Netherlands began in 2015, believed to be wolves crossing the border from neighboring Germany. In 2018, evidence confirmed the presence of wolves in the Netherlands, with traces of a wolf pack found in the Hoge Veluwe National Park in Gelderland, central Netherlands.
