Hurricane Helene has claimed over 215 lives since it tore through the southeastern U.S. last month, making it the deadliest hurricane since Katrina in 2005, which left 1,392 dead.
North Carolina experienced major impacts from the hurricane, and significant fatalities were also reported in South Carolina and Georgia. The hurricane originated in the western Caribbean on September 24 and landed in Florida two days later as a powerful Category 4 storm, packing winds of up to 140 mph.
After passing through Florida, it swept across North and South Carolina, Tennessee, Georgia, and Virginia before dissipating on the 29th. Most deaths resulted from falling trees onto vehicles and homes and flooding.
In Buncombe County, North Carolina, at least 72 people died, and around 200 remain missing. President Joe Biden visited the affected areas in Florida and Georgia this week to console the victims’ families and promised prompt recovery for those displaced. The White House stated that Biden is committed to addressing the full scope of the hurricane’s devastation.
