Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu and Chinese Defense Minister Wang Yi co-chaired the 19th annual strategic security negotiations, emphasizing efforts to counter U.S. influence. This marks the first high-level interaction between Moscow and Beijing since Donald Trump’s victory in the U.S. presidential election on November 5.

At the meeting, Shoigu underscored the importance of addressing the U.S. “dual containment” strategy, which aims at both Russia and China. He explained that while their current relationship differs from Cold War-era military and political alliances, the partnership between China and Russia is unmatched, and their strategic cooperation sets a new standard for great power relations in the present day.

Wang echoed these sentiments, saying, “The more complex the international situation becomes and the more external challenges arise, the more the two sides need to stand firm in solidarity and coordination to safeguard common interests.” He emphasized the need to stay alert to global changes, ensure strong communication channels, and continuously work to strengthen bilateral relations.

The two ministers committed to promoting global security and stability in support of Sino-Russian relations. Shoigu’s itinerary in China will continue until December 15, during which he will participate in the 9th China-Russia law enforcement security cooperation meeting and attend the 15th China International Aerospace Exhibition.
