President-elect Donald Trump announced that he would pursue negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to end the war in Ukraine at a press conference on Monday in Palm Beach, Florida. Trump characterized the ongoing conflict as the most horrific massacre since World War II, stressing the urgent need for an immediate cessation of hostilities.
Trump emphasized the necessity of dialogue with Putin and Zelenskyy, urging both parties to come to the negotiating table during the press conference. His remarks underscored the severe human toll in Ukraine and expressed the need for proactive efforts to find a resolution.
Trump’s statements came as part of an event announcing SoftBank Group Chairman Masayoshi Son’s extensive investment plans in the United States. Trump also addressed various international issues beyond the Ukrainian conflict.
Trump criticized the Biden administration’s decisions, particularly regarding the approval of U.S.-made long-range missiles for Ukraine. He argued that this move could potentially allow missile strikes on Russian territory, possibly leading to North Korean military involvement, which he deemed a significant error. Some analysts counter this claim, suggesting Biden’s decision was a response to North Korean military deployments.
He also mentioned his relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, stating that they maintain good relations. He expressed frustration over Biden’s decisions, questioning why his opinion was not sought before such crucial choices were made, especially on the eve of the new administration.
When asked about potential communications with Putin, Trump avoided a direct answer but asserted that had he still been in office, Russia would not have invaded Ukraine.
Trump indicated that he maintains a positive relationship with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, noting that formal discussions would commence post-inauguration. Regarding a potential meeting with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, he stated it could be arranged if desired by the Japanese side.
He also disclosed that he and First Lady Melania Trump had met with Akie Abe, widow of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, the previous day, during which they presented books and other items for Ishiba.
Addressing his relationship with Chinese President Xi Jinping, Trump mentioned that while Xi’s attendance at the inauguration remains unconfirmed, they had maintained good relations until the COVID-19 outbreak. He emphasized the importance of continued communication with Xi, asserting that many issues could be resolved through cooperation with China.
