North Korean leader Kim Jong Un of North Korea has taken a commemorative photo with officials from the National Aerospace Development Administration and the Emergency Satellite Launch Preparation Committee, who contributed to the launch of the reconnaissance satellite Malligyong-1 aboard the satellite launch vehicle Cholllima-1.

The Korean Central News Agency reported on the 24th that Kim visited the National Aerospace Development Administration the day before (23rd) and took a commemorative photo with affiliated scientists, technicians, and executives, encouraging them.

Kim’s Statements on the Significance of the Reconnaissance Satellite

Kim stated that possessing a reconnaissance satellite was an indispensable and unstoppable exercise of their legitimate right of self-defense in their forces. He mentioned that it was necessary to actively suppress and control hostile forces’ various dangerous and aggressive actions. Kim also noted that their new launch vehicle, engraved with the name Cholllima-1, signaled the beginning of a new era of space power in the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

In particular, Kim emphasized that the remarkable event of deploying a reconnaissance satellite allowed them to constantly monitor the military movements and activities of hostile forces, acting as a sentinel of space and providing a powerful surveillance capability. He highlighted that this successful reconnaissance satellite launch significantly increased their republic’s war deterrence.

Kim further added that he encouraged the scientists and technicians of the National Aerospace Development Administration to strive more and devote themselves to the immediate and prospective goals of aerospace reconnaissance capability set by the Party.

Kim also took a commemorative photo with officials from the Emergency Satellite Launch Preparation Committee, composed of scientists and executives from major universities and research institutions.

Kim attended a banquet celebrating the successful launch of Malligyong-1, held in the name of the North Korean government at the Mokran House, a hexagonal restaurant and banquet hall located in Pyongyang, in the evening with his wife, Ri Sol Ju, and daughter Kim Ju Ae.

The Korean Central News Agency reported that Kim attended the banquet with “his respected child” and the first lady. Previously, the Korean Central News Agency announced that Kim was with his beloved child when he visited the National Aerospace Development Administration.

Meanwhile, the government expressed disgust at North Korea’s self-congratulatory atmosphere for launching its military reconnaissance satellite.

Kim In-ae, deputy spokesperson for the Ministry of Unification, emphasized at the regular briefing of the Ministry of Unification on the day, “We feel disgusted that North Korea is celebrating an act that directly threatens peace on the Korean Peninsula and the world by clearly violating the UN Security Council resolution,” and “North Korea should now step out of the wrong path of provocation and threat and come to the path of dialogue and cooperation.”

Deputy Spokesperson Kim said, “North Korea is evaluating its so-called reconnaissance satellite launch as a success, but we understand that related agencies are currently meticulously tracking whether the satellite has entered orbit and is operating normally.”
