U.S. President Joe Biden announced plans to construct a temporary port capable of delivering large-scale relief supplies to the Gaza Strip within a few weeks, during the State of the Union Address on the 7th (local time).

Approximately 2.3 million Palestinian refugees in the Gaza Strip are suffering from starvation.

According to AP News and The Guardian UK, U.S. military engineers will embark on ships departing from the port of Larnaca in Cyprus to construct the temporary port without landing on the Gaza coast. The temporary port, built in a pontoon style, will deliver hundreds of truckloads of food to Palestinians daily. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is participating in constructing the temporary port.

After a disaster involving relief trucks occurred in the Gaza Strip, President Biden announced a policy to support relief supplies through air drops on the 1st. On the same day, the U.S., in collaboration with Jordan, conducted a third round of air support, dropping food for 38,000 people in the Gaza Strip.

Since the war between Israel and Hamas began on October 7 of last year, it’s reported that 30,000 people have died in the Gaza Strip. As relief work was delayed while refugees were suffering from severe starvation, President Biden received criticism.

President Biden, who is running for re-election in the November presidential election, has been criticized by the Arab and Muslim communities in America, as well as some progressive factions, for unilaterally supporting Israel’s retaliatory attacks on the Gaza Strip after the Hamas raid.
