TV Show Sparks Outrage for Altering Surname of Accused Murderer Lawyer

inews24 Views

Amidst the prosecution’s call for life imprisonment for a former large law firm attorney in America accused of murdering his wife during their divorce proceedings, controversy has arisen. On December 4th, the SBS program The Its Know changed the surname of the suspect, who originally had the surname Hyeon, to Choi, prompting some viewers to protest.

In response, a post titled “Stop Changing the Surnames of Murderers” was uploaded to the viewer’s bulletin board of The Its Know on SBS on December 5th.

An anonymous uploader pointed out, “Even if they don’t reveal the real name of the murderer, at least don’t change their surname. South Korea is a country that values honor according to one’s family line, so why change the surname of the murderer to another unrelated surname?”

He continued, “Imagine if, in America, a murderer’s surname was Jackson, but the broadcast changed it to Clinton. How disgraceful would it be for the innocent Clinton family?”

Another viewer who read the post left a comment, “I was confused because the surname didn’t match the case details, and I thought it was a different case. Even if you can guess the person by their surname, it should be revealed accurately.”

Mr. Hyeon, an American attorney in his 50s, was handed over to trial on charges of murdering his wife by repeatedly striking her head and other parts with a blunt object and strangling her in an apartment in Sajik-dong, Jongno-gu, Seoul, around 7:50 p.m. on December 3rd last year.

Hyeon claimed that he killed his wife accidentally during a financial dispute, but the victim’s family suspects intentional murder.

Meanwhile, it is known that Hyeon’s father served five terms as a member of the National Assembly. The first trial verdict for Hyeon is scheduled for the 24th of this month.
