globalautonews Views
Tesla’s sales in China in May 2024 amounted to only 72,573 units, down 6.6% from last year. The slide came after an 18% fall in April that reversed a 0.2% gain in March. However, it increased sharply by 16.7% compared to April 2024. Meanwhile, cumulative sales from January to May 2024 decreased by 7.12% to only 355,616 units. Tesla’s Gigafactory in Shanghai has an annual production capacity of 950,000 units and produces Model 3 and Model Y. In general, Tesla mainly produces vehicles for export in the first half of the year and for the domestic market in the second half of the year.
Meanwhile, according to a report by Reuters on May 24, 2024, Tesla’s Gigafactory in Shanghai is planning to reduce production of the Model Y by at least 20% from March 2024 to the end of June 2024. Reuters noted that it remains uncertain whether the production cuts in China will extend into the second half of 2024, whether reductions will also affect Model 3 production, and if Tesla’s factories in the US and Germany are implementing similar cuts.
