Why Amazon’s Zoox Chose Miami and Austin for Their Next Robo-Taxi Trials?

globalautonews Views

Zoox, a self-driving technology developer under Amazon, announced that it plans to begin testing soon in Miami, Florida, and Austin, Texas, US. This test was announced to follow California, Las Vegas, and Seattle.

Zoox’s purpose-built robotaxi (self-driving taxi) debuted on public roads in February 2023, offering a shuttle service for its employees in Foster City, California. This was the first time a purpose-built self-driving vehicle was operating without manual controls. Zoox is also preparing to launch robotaxi commercially in Las Vegas and is conducting robotaxi driving tests in wet weather conditions in Seattle.

In March 2024, Zoox provided an update on robotaxi operations in the city, expanding operating hours and routes. Zoox is currently planning to expand its robotaxi testing area in the US and will soon begin testing robotaxi in those metropolitan areas.

Zoox announced it will soon start testing its robotaxis in Miami and Austin. However, the company noted that it’s uncertain when residents of these cities will see the custom robotaxis operating in their business and entertainment districts.

Zoox chose Austin and Miami as robotaxi test cities because they are famous for their horizontal traffic lights, traffic lights hanging from wires and thunderstorms. In particular, it is said that Miami was chosen because traffic lights hang diagonally across the intersection. Meanwhile, any robotaxi tested in Miami and Austin should provide valuable data for safe and efficient driverless ride-hailing services.
