Kim Yo Jong, the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, has harshly criticized South Korea’s recent decision to suspend the 9/19 Comprehensive Military Agreement and resume artillery firing drills in maritime and land border areas, calling it a “suicidal arrogance.”
In her statement published in the Workers’ Party newspaper Rodong Sinmun today, Kim Yo Jong labeled South Korea’s action as “the blunt action of foe, taking right at our doorstep, is an obvious unjustifiable provocation intensifying the situation, playing with fire.”
She also condemned last month’s first-ever combined multi-domain exercise Freedom Edge between South Korea, the U.S., and Japan as the “height of anti-Democratic People’s Republic of Korea frenzy,” claiming it” clearly demonstrated that the actions of U.S. and hostile forces, aiming for military domination in the region, have crossed a dangerous line.”
Referring to the backdrop of the resumption of military drills, Kim Yo Jong mentioned the recent incident where over a million citizens have signed a petition demanding the impeachment of South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol. She emphasized that “Yoon Suk Yeol, facing the worst governance crisis, and his party are attempting an emergency escape in the space of escalating tensions,” and “precisely because of this situation, they are incessantly creating security instability in the region, escalating a war atmosphere, and even not hesitating to conduct live-fire drills in the quite dangerous border areas, even with domestic and foreign rejection on condemnation of the warmongers.”
Kim Yo Jong criticized the current administration, remarking on the uniqueness of today’s security environment compared to past inter-Korean relations and stating that it would be hard to find a similar situation historically. She also emphasized that no one could deny that the president, elected by the people, has risked the fate of the Republic of Korea.
She warned that “warmongers” should consider the potential consequences of their “furious war exercise arrogance.” Furthermore, she declared that if any actions are perceived as an infringement on the sovereignty of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea or as acts of war by their standards, the responsibilities and duties assigned to their armed forces by the Republic’s constitution would be executed immediately without delay.
