North Korea’s Diplomat Brings Kim Jong Un’s Greetings to Iran’s New President!

Han Song U, North Korea’s ambassador to Iran, attended the inauguration ceremony of Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian.

The Korean Central News Agency reported that “Ambassador Han participated in the inauguration ceremony of the Islamic Republic of Iran’s president, held at the National Assembly building in Tehran, at the invitation of the Iranian government on the 30th.”

According to the report, Han conveyed a warm greeting from North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to Pezeshkian. In return, Pezeshkian expressed his gratitude and asked Han to convey his sincere regards to Kim.

North Korea had previously sent Kim Yong Nam, the then President of the Presidium of the Supreme People’s Assembly, as a special envoy to the inaugurations of former President Hassan Rouhani in 2013 and 2017. However, there were no reports of a special envoy or ambassador attending the inauguration of former President Ebrahim Raisi in 2021.

Meanwhile, North Korea and Iran have long been traditional allies in opposition to the U.S., and there have been ongoing suspicions about their collaboration on ballistic missile and nuclear technology. Observers speculate that North Korea and Russia might deepen their “triangular military cooperation” with Iran, potentially focusing on missile technology and weaponry.

Earlier in April, North Korea sent a delegation led by Foreign Economic Minister Yun Jong Ho to Iran under the pretext of attending an export fair. This marked the first visit by a high-ranking North Korean official to Iran in nearly five years since Pak Chol Min, the Vice Chairman of the Supreme People’s Assembly, visited in 2019.
