0.005 Seconds: Lyles Brings Home First Men’s 100m Gold for U.S. in 20 Years

inews24 Views

The United States won its first Olympic gold medal in the men’s 100m in 20 years. Noah Lyles is the new “fastest man” at this Olympics.

Lyles won in the men’s 100m final at the 2024 Paris Olympics, held yesterday at the Stade de France in Paris. This win marked the U.S.’s first gold medal in the event since Justin Gatlin’s triumph at the 2004 Athens Olympics.

His gold medal win was dramatic. He and Kishane Thompson of Jamaica crossed the finish line almost simultaneously. Both runners recorded the same time of 9.79 seconds down to the hundredths of a second.

The race was so close that the official rankings were not immediately displayed on the scoreboard after the final. The medal colors were determined by measuring down to the thousandths of a second.

Lyles clocked in at 9.784 seconds, while Kishane Thompson recorded 9.789 seconds. Lyles edged out Thompson by just 0.005 seconds, benefiting significantly from his final sprint.

Although Lyles started slower than the other finalists, he gained speed after the 70-meter mark and managed to overtake Thompson.

Fred Kerley finished third at 9.82 seconds, earning the bronze medal.
