Why These 3 U.S. Cities Are a Foodies’ Dream

Daniel Kim Views

Travel trends are shifting from broad, general itineraries to more detailed, theme-specific experiences. Increasingly, travelers are moving away from the traditional all-encompassing travel styles of sightseeing, dining, and recreation and are instead opting for customized trips focused on specific interests like camping, leisure sports, culture, and sports.

There’s been a noticeable rise in the number of travelers who are passionate about food, as more people are eager to explore restaurants and local dishes worldwide. According to a recent survey by Hotels.com, nearly one-third of respondents listed “tasting local food” as their top priority for their next trip.

This trend indicates that interest in culinary experiences while traveling will likely grow, fueled by the increasing demand for international travel. The most popular travel destinations are also known for their excellent culinary offerings. For instance, an analysis by Hotels.com of the most searched overseas travel destinations revealed that the top 10 destinations included the U.S., France, Guam, Thailand, Vietnam, Italy, the U.K., Spain, Japan, and Germany—most of which are famous for their local cuisine.

Among these 10 destinations, Travel Plus has highlighted the U.S. New York, Hawaii, and Los Angeles, ranked among the top 10 most searched international cities. These cities saw significant growth in search volume compared to the previous year, with New York up 251%, Hawaii soaring by 780%, and Los Angeles increasing by 202%, all showcasing substantial triple-digit growth.

Here are some must-try foods, recommended restaurants, and tips for saving on travel expenses in these three major U.S. cities.

The Culinary Hub: New York

New York is renowned as a hub of diverse culinary cultures and the birthplace of iconic food trends. One of the most beloved breakfast options in the city is the salmon and cream cheese bagel. Tompkins Square Bagels is a standout spot, offering around 20 different types of bagels and an array of toppings and fillings. Their signature “everything” bagel, topped with smoked salmon and cream cheese, is a must-try.

New York offers plenty of options for those looking to save on food and drinks without compromising on quality. One of the best ways to cut food costs is by dining at street food vendors, food courts, or markets. You can find a slice of pizza for less than a dollar at some locations. Pizza is a staple of New York cuisine, and there are many local spots worth trying, including Sal and Sal and Carmine Pizza on Broadway.

New York is also home to a wide array of bars and clubs that are worth checking out. Many bars offer happy hour specials between 5 PM and 7 PM, where drinks are typically half-price. This allows travelers to enjoy a night out without breaking the bank.

The Natural and Culinary Ensemble: Los Angeles

One of the best ways to enjoy a summer vacation in Los Angeles is by indulging in exquisite natural cuisine. Geoffrey’s Malibu is a must-visit for a memorable dining experience. This all-day dining spot offers stunning beach views, surrounded by tropical plants and even a waterfall in the background. A favorite among Hollywood celebrities like Marilyn Monroe, Geoffrey’s continues to attract famous patrons for brunch, lunch, and dinner. Signature dishes include Maine lobster, crispy apple tart, eggs benedict, and spicy fried oysters.

Another must-visit restaurant is The Lobster, perched on a cliff where Santa Monica Pier 66 meets the Pacific Ocean. This award-winning establishment is known for its meticulously prepared fresh seafood and seasonal dishes. Its location near the ocean makes it perfect for a post-meal stroll along the beach or simply enjoying the breathtaking views.

You can save on food expenses in Los Angeles by grabbing a meal at a taco restaurant or taco truck near the beach. Popular spots like Guerrilla Tacos or Leo’s Tacos Truck offer tacos priced between $1 and $10. After picking up some reasonably priced tacos, you can head to the beach and enjoy your meal with the sand as your dining area. Besides, clean drinking water is easily accessible throughout Los Angeles, so bringing a reusable water bottle is a great way to stay hydrated without extra cost.

Fresh Seafood Paradise: Hawaii

Hawaii’s Oahu Island, famous for its warm weather and stunning emerald sea views, is a top destination for Korean travelers. Try the fresh poke at Nico’s Pier 38 near the fish market to make the most of your Hawaiian vacation. For a more budget-friendly option, visit Foodland, Hawaii’s largest local supermarket, where you can sample a variety of pokes at affordable prices.

If you’re in the mood for trendy local dining, Istanbul Hawaii, is a must-visit. This restaurant offers a delightful fusion of Mediterranean and Turkish cuisine and unique cocktails that have received glowing reviews. The brunch menu is especially worth trying, featuring the Turkish dish Çılbır served with yogurt and lamb kebabs that will introduce you to the rich local flavors.

If you want to experience Hawaii without breaking the bank, I recommend trying shave ice. This popular dessert features finely shaved ice topped with flavors like strawberry or coconut syrup, and you can add extras like mochi or condensed milk. You can enjoy this refreshing treat for around $5 in Hawaii.
