What Makes San Francisco a Must-Visit for Foodies? Title with 28 Michelin-Starred Restaurants

Daniel Kim Views

San Francisco has emerged as the U.S. city with the second-highest number of Michelin-starred restaurants, earning it the prestigious title of “City of Gastronomy”.

According to the San Francisco Tourism Board, a total of 28 restaurants in the city have been awarded Michelin stars.

Last week, the California Michelin Guide 2024 was released, featuring 577 restaurants, including around 85 Michelin-starred establishments. Among these, San Francisco is home to 28 Michelin-starred restaurants.

Seven restaurants, including Adams, Hilda and Jesse, and Kiln, have earned their first Michelin stars this year. Kiln, which opened just one year ago, has made a notable debut on the Michelin list by securing its first star.

Three restaurants have earned the prestigious three-star rating: Chef Corey Lee’s Benu, Dominique Crenn’s Atelier Crenn, and Michael Tusk’s Quince. Benu has maintained its three-star status since first achieving the rating in 2014. Notably, Corey Lee is recognized as the first Korean-American chef to receive a Michelin star.

Restaurants awarded two stars this year include Birdsong, Lazy Bear, Acquerello, Californios, and Saison. Sons & Daughters also made a significant leap, moving from one star to two.

Chef John Wesley of Kiln received the Michelin Young Chef Award. This marks the third consecutive year that San Francisco has produced a Michelin Young Chef, following Harrison Cheney of Sons & Daughters, who won the award last year.

San Francisco’s status as the second city in the U.S. with the most Michelin-starred restaurants, after New York, boosts its appeal as a tourist destination and enhances its reputation as a top spot for culinary travel.
