Seoul’s Balloon Bust: North Korea’s 420 Trash Balloons Land in South Korea

Daniel Kim Views

On August 21, at the International Cruise Terminal in Incheon, members of the Army’s 17th Division, the 10th Chemical, Biological, Radiological (CBR) Battalion, and the 1175th Engineer Group conducted a security operation against North Korean trash balloons. / Yonhap News

On Thursday morning, North Korea sent a significant number of trash balloons toward South Korea, continuing similar activity from the previous night. The South Korean Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) confirmed that around 420 balloons were launched from North Korea between the night of September 4 and the early hours of September 5.

Authorities have identified over 20 debris items in the Seoul and northern Gyeonggi regions. The balloons contain paper and plastic waste; analysis shows no harmful substances.

The JCS urged the public to avoid touching fallen balloons and report them to the nearest military base or police station. They emphasized, “As North Korea resumed trash balloon distribution from 9 PM Wednesday, please do not touch any balloons you find and report them immediately.”

North Korea has been sending trash balloons to the South in response to the distribution of anti-North Korean leaflets since late May.

This marks the first time in 25 days North Korea has launched trash balloons toward South Korea since August 10. During that incident, out of approximately 240 identified balloons, about 10 landed in our area.
