According to diplomatic sources in Beijing, Kim Jong Un sent a warm message to Xi, marking the occasion with a reaffirmed commitment to strengthening the historically close ties between the two countries. Kim emphasized the importance of continuing to develop their “friendly cooperative relationship” in line with the demands of the current era. He reflected on the 75 years of diplomatic relations, describing the shared path of socialism that the two nations have followed, overcoming significant trials and challenges throughout history.

Kim also expressed his hope for the continued success of the Chinese people, specifically under Xi’s leadership, as they strive to build a modern socialist state.

In his response, Xi echoed similar sentiments, noting that the establishment of diplomatic ties 75 years ago had “epoch-making significance.” Xi expressed China’s willingness to use this milestone as an opportunity to further enhance strategic communication and cooperation with North Korea. He highlighted the desire to strengthen their traditional friendship, deepen bilateral exchanges, and promote the steady development of socialism in both countries for the benefit of their people.

This message exchange comes in the broader context of their historical relationship. Kim and Xi also exchanged similar messages in 2019 to mark the 70th anniversary of diplomatic ties, underscoring the ceremonial nature of these interactions. Despite the congratulatory tone, some analysts have pointed to signs of strain in the DPRK-China relationship in recent years, indicating that while symbolic, these exchanges do not necessarily reflect deeper cooperation or resolution of underlying tensions between the two countries.
