According to Timeout, the Studio Museum in Harlem will feature works by sculptor Tom Lloyd in its first exhibition after reopening next fall.

Tom Lloyd’s works hold special significance, as they were part of the opening exhibition when the Studio Museum in Harlem first opened in 1968. Thelma Golden, the museum’s director and chief curator, stated, “The Studio Museum in Harlem will move forward decisively while honoring our past with these revelatory exhibitions.”

Following the exhibition of Tom Lloyd’s works, the Studio Museum plans to exhibit its collection of more than 9,000 works one by one. Visitors will also have the chance to see pieces by renowned African American artists like Romare Bearden and photographer Dawoud Bey.

The Studio Museum in Harlem was established to address the exclusion of Black artists from the American art world. In addition to exhibitions, it has also supported and nurtured emerging Black artists.

The renovated museum will include new art program spaces and public amenities. Golden highlighted that the Harlem Studio Museum is dedicated to supporting African artists and documenting the work of past artists. She reaffirmed the museum’s commitment to nurturing Black artists in the future.
