North Korean leader Kim Jong Un emphasized his determination to secure the strongest defense capabilities for national security, stating that his past negotiations with the U.S. only reinforced his belief in their “hostile North Korea policy.”

According to a report by the Korean Central News Agency on Friday, during the opening ceremony of the Defense Development-2024, Kim stated, “We have already gone as far as we can with negotiation strategies with the U.S., and what we are certain of is not the willingness of a superpower to coexist, but a thorough stance of power and an unchanging, aggressive, and hostile policy toward North Korea.”

Kim stated that the U.S. is expanding military alliances that share nuclear capabilities to pressure North Korea and deploying strategic assets to the Korean Peninsula. He added that “we have never faced a situation where the Korean Peninsula could escalate into the most destructive nuclear war as we do now.”

He asserted that only the strongest defense capabilities, which can overwhelm the enemy, will be able to “guarantee peace, stability, and development.”

In particular, he vowed that the North Korean party and government will never stand by in any situation where the nation’s security is compromised, making it clear that they will never let the military balance tip in their hands.

Kim’s remarks indicate a clear stance against the possibility of a U.S.-North Korea summit and negotiations resuming while reiterating that denuclearization talks will not take place.

Kim also presented tasks for innovating military equipment to align with modern warfare. He emphasized that they aim to evolve North Korea’s self-defense capabilities while modernizing military technology and equipping it with more power to correspond with the new aspects of modern warfare from adversary nations.

The opening ceremony featured members of the Political Bureau of the Workers’ Party’s Central Committee, key commanders from various military agencies, and workers and scientists from the defense industry. Jo Chun Ryong, a secretary of the party’s Central Committee, delivered the opening address. The ceremony included an Air Force demonstration flight and a commemorative concert in the evening.
