Al Jazeera reported that Russian forces launched a devastating guided bomb attack on the southern Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia, killing at least 13 civilians and wounding more than 30 others.

Graphic footage shared on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s Telegram channel showed bloodied civilians lying in city streets, receiving emergency medical treatment. Zelenskyy wrote on X that there is nothing more brutal than bombing a city, primarily when it is known that innocent civilians will suffer.

The Ukrainian Prosecutor General’s Office reported on Telegram that the attack damaged high-rise apartment buildings, industrial facilities, and other infrastructure. Debris from the explosions struck trams and buses carrying passengers.

Regional Governor Ivan Fedorov stated that Russian forces targeted residential areas with guided bombs in the afternoon, damaging at least two apartment buildings. Throughout the nearly three-year conflict, Moscow has repeatedly conducted airstrikes on civilian infrastructure while consistently denying that it targets non-combatants, according to Al Jazeera.

This latest assault comes as both Russia and Ukraine seek to demonstrate their military capabilities ahead of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration on January 20.
