A man in his 50s is currently under investigation for the alleged murder of his father after being arrested at the funeral earlier this week.
The suspect reportedly contacted the police around 6:30 p.m. on the day of the incident, informing them that his father—who was said to have been suffering from dementia—had passed away in bed.
However, an analysis conducted by the National Forensic Service on the deceased revealed evidence of assault, including fractured vertebrae. Consequently, police arrested the suspect at his father’s funeral on July 3.
Under current law, police are authorized to make an arrest without a warrant if they have reasonable cause to believe the suspect is guilty of a crime punishable by at least three years in prison, and if there is a risk of flight or destruction of evidence.
The suspect denies the murder allegation. He claims that he and his father had a physical altercation over the issue of dressing him, after which his father went to sleep following alcohol consumption. The suspect states he later found his father dead.
It’s worth noting that patricide carries a more severe punishment than other types of murder in the United States. The minimum sentence for patricide is seven years in prison, compared to five years for other murder charges.
