President Yoon Suk Yeol is listening to a speech by Li Qiang, the Prime Minister of China, at the ASEAN+3 (Korea, China, Japan) summit in Jakarta, Indonesia, last September. On the right is Fumio Kishida, the Prime Minister of Japan.

Reports indicate that the Korea-China-Japan summit will be held on the 26th and 27th of this month. After the April 10th general election, the final date will be determined following high-level discussions.

According to a report by the Yomiuri Shimbun on the 10th, the governments of Korea, Japan, and China have begun final coordination to hold the Korea-China-Japan summit in Korea in late May. If the meeting takes place in the latter half of next month, it will be the first in over four years.

President Yoon Suk Yeol, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, and Chinese Prime Minister Li Qiang are expected to attend the upcoming summit. China’s growth rate has been stagnant due to a power struggle with the U.S. It has been reported that China is expressing a strong desire to participate in the summit.

The meeting is also expected to continue to pressure China on North Korea. Wary of the expanded cooperation between Korea, the U.S., and Japan in security, China is expected to coordinate diplomatically with North Korea.

Some are paying attention to the possibility of Chinese President Xi Jinping visiting Korea in light of this tripartite meeting. However, a visit this year is predicted to be challenging due to several diplomatic events.

While the Ministry of Foreign Affairs did not specify the exact date and time, it explained that the tripartite summit schedule is in the final coordination stage.

Foreign Minister Cho Tae Yul also mentioned on the 9th during a meeting with Lee Hee Sup, Secretary-General of the Trilateral Cooperation Secretariat (TCS), at the Seoul Ministry of Foreign Affairs building, that the three countries are in the ‘final coordination’ of the summit schedule.

The Korea-China-Japan summit has been held annually since 2008, with the chairmanship rotating between Japan→China→Korea. However, it has been suspended since the 2019 meeting in Chengdu, China, due to the global outbreak of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19).
