Ceasefire in the Skies: North Korea Puts Provocative Balloon Campaign on Hold

Yonhap News

During a call with Asia Today, a high-level South Korean presidential office staff stated, “We will deeply review North Korea’s stance and decide on our future response direction through the meeting with related agencies.”

Another staff member from the presidential office commented that due to significant public interest, they anticipate providing a briefing after an upcoming meeting. While they have established foundational principles regarding their response to North Korea, these will be reviewed during the meeting, and details will be shared afterward.

The meeting’s attendees are deputy-level officials from related agencies. They are expected to evaluate and analyze North Korea’s reaction and reconsider whether to resume loudspeaker broadcasts in North Korea.

Suspending the effect of the 9/19 military agreement is necessary to resume loudspeaker broadcasts in North Korea. The government could discuss the invalidation of the 9/19 military agreement at the cabinet meeting on the 4th.

North Korea has repeatedly sent balloons filled with garbage but announced a temporary halt to related actions on the evening of the 2nd, as the South Korean government announced its policy to resume loudspeaker broadcasts in North Korea.
