Immediate Military Actions to Resume at Korean Border Amid Tensions

Daniel Kim Views

On the 4th, South Korean Prime Minister Han Duck Soo delivered a speech at the Cabinet meeting held at the Government Seoul Office in Jongno-gu, Seoul.

During the cabinet meeting, Han stated, “In light of North Korea’s ongoing provocations causing actual harm and threats to our citizens, the 9/19 Comprehensive Ineter-Korean Military Agreement, which has lost its meaning due to North Korea’s de facto annulment declaration, is causing many issues in our military’s preparedness.” He added, “Therefore, in today’s cabinet meeting, we plan to pursue a measure to suspend the entire effect of the 9/19 Military Agreement until mutual trust between South Korea and North Korea is restored.”

In response to North Korea’s recent provocations, including the dispersion of fecal balloons and disruption of GPS signals, the South Korean government has decided to suspend the entire effect of the 9/19 Military Agreement. As a result, military training is now possible in the vicinity of the military demarcation line, and loudspeaker broadcasts in North Korea can be resumed, among other immediate measures against North Korean provocations.
