According to South Korean military officials, the defector arrived near Gyodong Island after crossing the inter-Korean neutral waters and expressed a will to defect.

At the time of the defection, the waters of the Han River estuary had receded, allowing the North Korean defectors to walk across the neutral waters.

Newsis reported that two individuals attempted to defect that day, but one went missing during the process.

A South Korean military official stated, “This is something the National Intelligence Service will disclose.”

During a National Assembly Defense Committee meeting that day, Shin Won Sik, the South Korean Minister of National Defense, responded to related questions, “It was a successful operation that we monitored from the departure point and successfully guided them.”

“I’m not sure if we can disclose this. If there are aspects to share after consulting with the relevant agencies, we’ll report to the National Defense Committee,” he added.

On October 24 of last year, three North Korean women and one man also defected by crossing the NLL in a small fishing boat in the East Sea.
