According to Asahi TV News, a 38-year-old Japanese hairdresser who was sentenced to 17 years and 6 months in prison and 20 strokes of the cane by a Singapore court for raping a female university student on August 1 has decided not to appeal.

The hairdresser is the first Japanese national to receive a caning sentence.

The defense lawyer, Takehiro Miyoshi, told Asahi TV, “We decided not to appeal, as there is little chance of a significant reduction in the sentence.”

In Singapore, caning is permitted for male offenders between the ages of 16 and 50, both locals and foreigners, for crimes such as drug trafficking, rape, fraud, corruption, and robbery.

The convicted individual is required to change into clothing that exposes the buttocks, after which they are struck on the back of the thighs with a 1.5-meter-long and 1.27-centimeter-thick rattan cane.

Typically, caning is carried out in one session on a single day, but the exact date of the hairdresser’s caning has not been disclosed.

It is said that the individual is notified of the execution of the caning on the day it is carried out.

Singapore’s caning is notorious for being severe.

Attorney Miyoshi reported, “According to accounts from those who have actually experienced caning, they cannot sleep on their back for 1-2 months after the punishment.”
