The Chinese Embassy in South Korea has urged Chinese nationals residing in Korea to refrain from participating in political activities. This warning comes in response to allegations from some ruling party lawmakers that numerous Chinese individuals are attending rallies supporting President Yoon Suk Yeol’s impeachment near his residence in Hannam-dong, Seoul.

The embassy posted a notice on its WeChat account on Saturday: “According to South Korea’s Immigration Control Act, foreign nationals in Korea are prohibited from engaging in political activities except as specified by law.” The notice warned that a violation may result in deportation.

The embassy noted, “Political gatherings, including protests, are occurring frequently in various locations across Korea,” and requested that Chinese nationals and tourists maintain a safe distance from crowded assembly areas.

It also emphasized the importance of avoiding political statements and being mindful of traffic restrictions due to protests to ensure personal safety and freedom of movement.

On December 4, the Chinese Embassy in South Korea issued a notice urging Chinese nationals to increase their security awareness immediately after declaring martial law.

Some ruling party members have repeatedly raised concerns about the alleged participation of numerous Chinese individuals in rallies supporting Yoon’s impeachment in front of his residence in Hannam-dong.

Kim Min Jeon, a member of the People Power Party, posted on his social media account the same day. He corroborated the supporter’s claim and photos: “Many Chinese are participating in the rally supporting President Yoon Suk Yeol’s impeachment.”

The post stated, “Koreans who support impeachment, take note. You are complicit in subverting the country. Do not watch the news. The media has already been compromised by those speaking Chinese and Korean-Chinese individuals.” It also featured a photo of someone wearing a Chinese university jacket.

Subsequently, controversy arose over the photo’s unclear location and the attendees’ unverified nationalities. The post has since been deleted.
