Russia’s Baltika Slaps Carlsberg Subsidiaries with $900 Million Damage Claim

Daniel Kim Views

Baltika and Carlsberg of Russia are currently in a dispute over licensing issues.

On the 1st (local time), a Russian court revealed that Baltika Brewery in Russia had claimed damages equivalent to 6.24 billion Danish crowns ($897 million) from four Carlsberg subsidiaries.

After Moscow seized and took over Baltika, a subsidiary of Carlsberg in Russia, in July 2023, Carlsberg Group CEO Jacob Aarup Andersen claimed their business had been stolen.

Since then, Carlsberg has vowed to take all possible measures to protect its employees, assets, and operations in Russia.

According to documents submitted to the St. Petersburg court, the Carlsberg subsidiaries that Baltika has claimed damages from are Carlsberg Sverige, Carlsberg Deutschland, Carlsberg Brewery, and Hoppy Union, a Russian subsidiary of Carlsberg.

Court documents do not specify the amount of damages, and previous legal disputes involving Baltika and Carlsberg were conducted confidentially due to documents containing trade secrets.

On the other hand, Carlsberg’s business unit in Kazakhstan has appealed to the Russian court after being banned from selling the Baltika beer brand of its former Russian partner in some international markets. The preliminary arbitration hearing is scheduled for May 15.
