The National Samsung Electronics Union (NSEU), which staged a walkout in June for the first time since its founding, has declared an indefinite general strike starting this month.
The union said Thursday that the company had decided to launch an identity strike after management showed no intention of holding talks over its demands.
The union had previously planned to conduct a three-day strike starting Monday and then move on to a five-day strike next Monday. However, they revised the plan to kick off an indefinite strike on Thursday.
The union’s demands include a guarantee of one day to commemorate the founding of the labor union, an average wage increase of 3.5% for all union members, improvement of the bonus system, and compensation for economic losses due to the strike.
The union urged more members to participate in the walkout, claiming, “Your determination is needed to bring forward our goals and victory.” It asked them not to go to work until directives from the executive branch were issued.
Previously, the union claimed that the strike would disrupt the production line as the personnel responsible for facilities and operations are mission from the line, calling the purpose of the strike as production disruption.
Meanwhile, out of the 6,450 people who expressed their intention to participate in the general strike, 5,211 were identified as belonging to the semiconductor equipment, manufacturing, and development.
