A recent report suggests that while China’s artificial intelligence(AI) models lag behind their American counterparts by about six months, they could soon surpass the U.S. in AI adoption.

According to former Google China president Kai-Fu Lee, China’s AI models are less advanced than the U.S. models.” China’s AI models lag their U.S. counterparts by 6 to 9 months,” Lee shared in an interview cited by the blockchain media outlet Cointelegraph.

However, due to the decreasing costs in model training, Lee emphasized that rapid advancements in China’s AI sector could soon outpace their American competitors. He expressed his optimism, saying, “I would predict, by early next year, will proliferate in China much faster than in the U.S.” However, he noted that it remains uncertain whether small companies or large enterprises will be the ones to develop these applications.

Lee predicted that it might take 5 to 8 years to elevate generative AI capabilities to the level of a so-called “super app”—an app that performs a wide range of tasks in a single application—suitable for consumers.
