Brad Smith Calls for AI Research Funding as Microsoft Plans $80 Billion Investment

Microsoft has unveiled its AI data center investment plans for the 2025 fiscal year.

On Saturday, Brad Smith, Microsoft’s President and Vice Chair, announced that the company plans to spend approximately $80 billion on data centers powering AI in the current fiscal year.

Smith also urged the next administration to increase funding for AI research and develop a national talent strategy to educate Americans about AI technology.

He urged policymakers to consider the potential impact of AI regulations on the global competitiveness of American companies, especially as competition with Chinese firms intensifies.

Smith emphasized that the U.S. is leading a world-changing tech boom through collaboration among tech companies, chip suppliers, and software developers.

He added that Microsoft plans to invest more than half of the $80 billion earmarked for data centers in the United States.

This announcement comes as Microsoft is committed to investing trillions into AI-dependent data centers and exploring nuclear energy to power these facilities.

Smith noted that America’s current leadership in the global AI race is driven by private capital investment and innovation from companies of all sizes, from dynamic startups to established corporations.

He suggested that if the government, educational institutions, and the nonprofit sector contribute to steering the AI era, they could optimally leverage emerging technologies.

Microsoft’s stock climbed 1.14%, reaching $423.35.
