Thai Citizens Outraged After a Child Urinated Outside the Thai Royal Palace

Daniel Kim Views

A photograph of a child, presumed to be part of a Chinese tourist family, urinating at a palace site in Thailand has caused outrage.

If their identity is confirmed as Chinese, this incident will be added to the list of impolite behaviors exhibited by some Chinese tourists worldwide.

Foreign media outlets, including the South China Morning Post, reported that a photograph of a girl approximately 4-5 years old urinating at the Chakri Maha Prasat, a popular tourist spot in Bangkok, went viral on social media. The site was once the residence of the Thai royal family and is currently a venue for major events in Thailand.

In the photograph, two adults who appear to be the girl’s parents, stand behind the child as she urinates. The male figure is seen wearing a backpack with a Xiaomi logo. Local Thai media speculated the family is likely Chinese tourists based on this evidence. The Thai Ministry of Tourism and Sports criticized their behavior as inappropriate.

Some Chinese tourists have a notorious reputation for their impolite behavior abroad. Last month, a Chinese tourist swapped a used water bottle for a souvenir flask from the British Museum gift shop.

In March, a group of middle-aged male tourists, allegedly Chinese, approached a woman sunbathing in a bikini at Repulse Bay in Hong Kong and brazenly took a photo with her. The incident was widely shared on social media.

The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs regularly issues guidelines urging its citizens to behave appropriately when traveling abroad.
