College Student’s One-Night Stand Costs $43,800: Why Meeting Strangers Online Is Riskier Than You Think

wikitree Views

The story of a male college student who was financially devastated after being targeted by a peer rather than a hostess has unsettled many. The lawyer handling the case warned, “This incident illustrates how a thoughtless one-night stand can lead to severe consequences,” advising people to exercise exceptional caution.

In a video posted on the YouTube channel “Good Lawyer,” the male college student detailed how he met a woman in her early twenties through a dating app.

In the video, it was reported that the woman was very forward. After they exchanged contact information and began messaging on KakaoTalk, she would send at least four quick replies for every single message he sent.

When they met in person, the woman showed interest by commenting that he looked like a celebrity. The lawyer later noted that, upon seeing the man’s photo, he thought he resembled an idol.

The two hit it off and decided to go to a motel on their first date, where they consensually engaged in some physical intimacy. However, the man attempted to initiate sexual intercourse, but something felt off.

Although the woman allowed him to touch her, she repeatedly said, “No, no.” The man, thinking the woman was also actively participating, believed there wouldn’t be any issues.

However, a few days later, the man faced a shocking and tragic turn of events. The woman filed a rape charge against him, claiming, “I said no, but you forced me.” What was initially a casual fling had turned into a criminal case.

It turned out that the woman had recorded their encounter without his knowledge and used the recording as evidence against him.

The male student found himself in a difficult situation because only an audio recording existed, not a video. While a video could have shown mutual consent, the audio-only captured her saying, “No, no.”

Under current law in South Korea, filming sexual encounters is illegal, but recording audio is generally permissible.

The man had no choice but to negotiate a settlement with the woman strategically.

However, the woman initially demanded a staggering settlement amount of $73,000. After much negotiation, they managed to reduce it to $43,800.

The male student, who couldn’t afford to pay, had his parents cover the settlement cost. They had to withdraw from their retirement savings to raise the money, and the man received a suspended sentence.

What made the situation even more terrifying was that the woman in her early 20s wasn’t even a hostess working in the adult entertainment industry.

The YouTuber lamented that the man had written over five handwritten apology letters to the woman, and to complicate matters further, his mother had also sent a handwritten letter to the woman he referred to as a “gold digger.”

While the number of people using dating apps to find partners is increasing, related crimes are also increasing. Both men and women must remember that meeting strangers can pose significant risks.
