Chinese Tradition Under Fire After Bride is Taped to Utility Pole in Viral Wedding Prank

inews24 Views

A viral video of a Chinese wedding reception where the groom’s friends wrapped the bride in tape and hung her from a utility pole has sparked controversy.

The groom’s friends taped the bride, dressed in traditional Chinese wedding attire, to a utility pole during her wedding reception in Shanxi Province in northern China / Weibo

South China Morning Post reported that the groom’s friends bound the bride in tape and tied her to a utility pole during her wedding reception.

The bride screamed for help, but no one came to help. The situation ended when the groom arrived sometime later to take her down.

As the photos spread across social media, a man claiming to be the groom’s longtime friend shared, “It was a prank we agreed upon in advance.”

But when criticism intensified despite his justification, he admitted it was an “excessive act” and apologized.

“Hun nao,” or wedding hazing, is a Chinese tradition where friends prank the bride and groom to lighten the mood on their wedding day.

This ancient practice reportedly disappeared during the rise of the Chinese Communist Party but was revived in the late 1970s.

Many are concerned that the practice has recently devolved into humiliating acts against the couple and are asking for a reevaluation of the custom.
