South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported that young people in China are turning away from extravagant ceremonies and choosing budget-friendly weddings at McDonald’s and Haidilao instead.

One bride reportedly held her wedding at McDonald’s, sharing that she spent 800 yuan (approximately $112) renting the venue. Including food and decorations, her wedding of 20 guests cost around 2,000 yuan (around $280) in total.

“My husband and I enjoyed our dates at McDonald’s in school. We shared our toasts with Coca-Cola instead of wine and had a great time with burgers and fries. It was an unforgettable day,” she explained. She also mentioned they decided to save money on their wedding to take wedding photos in Greece.

Another couple held their wedding at Haidilao, where staff decorated the venue and even provided a live performance.

“While a lavish wedding may attract attention, it only lasts a day. We prefer to invest in our daily lives instead. The money we saved will go toward decorating our new home,” they said.

SCMP explained that traditional weddings in China tend to be extravagant and complex, leading younger couples to opt for simpler venues that help them avoid complicated rituals and reduce costs.

Many online are responding positively to this new wedding trend, with people sharing that it’s a good idea. The couple can celebrate any time they visit a McDonald’s. “What young people need is not a lavish wedding but a ceremony that allows them to express themselves,” one comment wrote.
