At a UN Security Council meeting in New York on Wednesday, South Korean Ambassador to the UN Hwang Joon Kuk strongly condemned North Korea’s recent test launch of a hypersonic intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM). He called the missile test a “stark example of where blood money ultimately ends up.” In response, North Korea’s UN Ambassador Kim Song defended the launch, describing it as a “legitimate exercise of sovereignty.”

Hwang addressed the council with deep concern about North Korea’s ballistic missile tests, warning that Pyongyang’s continued actions were endangering global security. He stressed that if the Security Council fails to hold North Korea accountable for its repeated violations of UN resolutions, its misuse of the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), and its pursuit of aggressive military strategies, the international community could face even more significant threats.

Quoting scripture, Hwang stated, “The blood of soldiers cries out from the ground,” and called for an immediate halt to these provocative actions. He further described the IRBM launch as a serious threat to international peace and stability, particularly given that North Korea had conducted 50 missile tests just last year alone.

Hwang also raised concerns about North Korean troops deployed in Russia. He noted, “North Korean soldiers, ill-equipped for modern warfare and relying on outdated tactics, have become easy targets for drone strikes in Russia’s illegal war.” He claimed that at least 1,100 North Korean soldiers have died in this conflict, with their families left uninformed about the true causes of their deaths.

“These North Korean soldiers are essentially pawns of Kim Jong Un, indoctrinated to sacrifice their lives on the battlefield to generate funds for the regime and secure advanced military technology from Russia,” he added.

U.S. Deputy Ambassador to the UN Dorothy Shea echoed these concerns, stating, “North Korea is reaping significant benefits from Russia’s military expertise and technology, which could enhance its ability to threaten neighboring countries.”

In response, North Korea’s Ambassador Kim Song reiterated that the IRBM test was part of Pyongyang’s defense strategy to strengthen its strategic deterrence amid a changing security environment. He emphasized that the missile launch was a “legitimate exercise of North Korea’s sovereignty.”
