Breaking Records: NewJeans Hits #1 on Billboard 200 in Record Time

joynews24 Views

NewJeans was recognized as one of the most innovative and influential musical artists under 21.

On May 31, Billboard announced the 21 Under 21 list on its website, with NewJeans as the only K-pop act to make the cut this year.

21 Under 21 is chosen by Billboard each year, taking various factors such as album and song sales, streaming size, social media exposure, radio/TV reach, and overall influence on the industry into account. Billboard highlighted the impressive achievements of NewJeans, who debuted less than two years ago, stating that they have “established a unique position in K-pop.”

NewJeans made it to the top of the Billboard 200 within a year, the shortest time after their debut among K-pop groups with their second EP Get Up. They also entered the Billboard main song chart Hot 100 with five songs (“OMG,” “Ditto,” “Super Shy,” “ETA,” and “Cool With You”) and placed three songs (“OMG,” “Ditto,” “Super Shy”) in the Top 10 on the Global 200. Thanks to their popularity, NewJeans also received the Group of the Year award at the 2024 Billboard Women in Music Awards.

NewJeans continues to receive rave reviews on major charts in South Korea and abroad with their recently released double single How Sweet.

How Sweet and the title track of the same name entered Spotify’s latest Weekly Top Songs Global during May 24-30 at #85 and took #1 in Korea and Taiwan. In domestic music charts like Melon, “How Sweet” and the included song “Bubble Gum” are gaining popularity as they are currently ranked #2 and #3, respectively. NewJeans won first place on MBC M’s Show! Champion and KBS2 Music Bank with “How Sweet,” earning them the title of a double crown on music shows.
