40-Day Strike Comes to a Close as UAW and Stellantis Reach Accord

globalautonews Views

The United Auto Workers (UAW) union reached a tentative agreement with Stellantis on October 28, 2023, regarding renewing their labor contract. Multiple U.S. media outlets report that they expect the strike, which has lasted over 40 days, to end soon following a similar agreement with Ford Motor on the 25th. They also expect GM to reach a tentative agreement shortly.

The terms of Stellantis’ agreement appear to be close to those of Ford. It is expected that a cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) will be reinstated, raising wages in line with inflation, and wages will increase by 25% over the next four and a half years until the new labor contract takes effect.

The UAW initiated negotiations with GM, Ford, and Stellantis in mid-July to review each labor agreement. However, when they couldn’t reach an agreement, they went on strike on September 15. Now, only a tentative agreement with GM remains. The tentative agreements between the UAW and the Big 3 will become formal labor contracts after going through procedures such as approval by each union member. In the past, there have been cases where union members rejected the content agreed upon by the UAW, so it’s not entirely over yet.
