U.S. Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen is set to meet with Liu He, China’s Vice Premier, often referred to as President Xi Jinping’s economic adviser, in San Francisco this week ahead of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit.
According to reports from Reuters, AFP, and AP on the 6th, the U.S. Treasury Department announced that Secretary Yellen is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with Vice Premier Liu on the 9th and 10th in San Francisco.
The Treasury Department explained that the meeting is expected to be a ‘time for more focused diplomacy’ to stabilize relations and help advance economic issues.
AP reported that the meeting comes amid a series of high-level meetings to ease tensions between the U.S. and China, the world’s two biggest economies.
President Joe Biden of the U.S. and President Xi Jinping of China are expected to attend the APEC summit held in San Francisco from the 11th to the 17th, and a bilateral summit between the two countries is anticipated to take place.
AFP quoted a Treasury Department official saying that at the meeting, Secretary Yellen and Vice Premier Liu are expected to share perspectives on the U.S.-China economy and the global economy.
The official predicted that Secretary Yellen would raise concerns about economic practices, such as market access barriers, and discuss issues related to national security concerns.
Meanwhile, Wang Wenbin, a spokesperson for China’s Foreign Ministry, also announced on the afternoon of the same day through their website that Vice Premier Liu will visit the U.S. from the 8th to the 12th at the invitation of Secretary Yellen.
