The iconic scene of Homer Simpson strangling his son Bart Simpson in the American animated series The Simpsons is likely to be no more.
According to foreign media outlets TMZ and IGN on the 6th (local time), in the third episode of The Simpsons Season 35, “McMansion & Wife,” Homer Simpson declares to his neighbor that he will no longer strangle his son.
While shaking hands with his neighbor, who comments that he “has a firm grip,” Homer Simpson tells his wife, Marge Simpson, that “the strangling was effective.” He then jokes, “I won’t strangle anymore. Times have changed.”
The scene of Homer Simpson strangling his son Bart Simpson has been a comedic gesture that has elicited laughter from viewers since the series began in 1989. It has also been parodied in various webtoons in South Korea.
After The Simpsons Season 31, which aired from 2019 to 2020, the strangling scene was absent for a while. Some interpret that the production team accepted the growing criticism of Homer Simpson’s corporal punishment as times have changed.
One fan expressed regret about the discontinuation of the scene, while others were pleased with the production team’s decision.
Meanwhile, The Simpsons hold the record for the longest-running sitcom and animation in American broadcasting history, with its 35th season airing this year.
